Vic Coalition to track sex offenders, arsonists with GPS Technology

VIC COALITION TO TRACK SEX OFFENDERS, ARSONISTS WITH GPS TECHNOLOGY
·
High-tech monitoring for serious offenders and suspects on bail
A Baillieu Government will fund a $5 million upgrade of Victoria’s outdated electronic offender monitoring system and introduce Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to better track offenders and protect Victorians from dangerous offenders, Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Leader Ted Baillieu said today.

Under the Coalition’s plan, courts will be able to order GPS monitoring of serious sex offenders and convicted arsonists on supervision orders, and suspects who are released on strict bail conditions before trial.

“After 11 years of Labor, John Brumby’s outdated monitoring system is failing to keep Victorians safe from dangerous criminals,” Mr Baillieu said.
“Thanks to Labor’s inaction, offenders can easily re-offend despite monitoring, and high-risk suspects on bail can flee without detection.

“Only the Coalition will build a safer Victoria, better protect Victorian families from dangerous criminals and restore public confidence in our justice system.

“The move to cutting-edge GPS technology will allow authorities to accurately track offenders in real time wherever they go, unlike Labor’s system which relies on the offender’s proximity to a base unit.

“GPS technology has been ignored by John Brumby and his incompetent government and it is clear that an upgrade of Victoria’s old electronic monitoring hardware to a modern
GPS-based system is long overdue,” Mr Baillieu said.

The limitations of the current monitoring system were highlighted late last year when it was reported that a repeat sex offender who was subject to electronic monitoring allegedly indecently assaulted eight women in broad daylight over a period of two months.

Authorities had no way of linking the attacks to the offender because existing monitoring technology can only give authorities an offender’s location when they are close to a base station, usually installed in the offender’s home.

The current system’s reliability had also been questioned following revelations that serious sex offenders have been able to flee or have gone unmonitored, sometimes for weeks at a time, before authorities became aware that they were off-line.

“Labor has had years to fix a system that is failing to protect Victorians,” Mr Baillieu said.

“If Victorian families are to be protected from serious offenders when they return to the community, it is vital that those offenders are properly monitored.”

A GPS-based monitoring system provides the following benefits:

·
The ability to track offenders in any location across Victoria, Australia or around the world
·
The ability to track offenders in real time
·
The system can be programmed with the offender’s bail conditions or conditions of release and automatically alert authorities if curfews or no-go zones are breached
·
A greater deterrence as offenders know they are under constant surveillance
·
The ability to quickly identify last known locality of offenders who abscond.

The current system, which Labor uses for some sex offenders and offenders on Labor’s home detention, is based on a radio frequency (RF) bracelet or tag fitted to the ankle of the offender, which communicates with a base station installed in the offender’s home and/or workplace. It can automatically alert corrections staff if the subject moves out of range of the base station. A mobile tag scanner can also be used by corrections staff to manually locate an offender who is within close range.

However, the current technology in use in Victoria has limited functionality and is of little or no benefit in monitoring an offender’s movements when they are out of range of their base station.

GPS-based offender monitoring has been in use in New South Wales since 2008.

The proposed new GPS system will also strengthen a Coalition initiative announced last year to subject convicted arsonists to ongoing supervision after release.

“If the Coalition is elected, authorities will be able to track the movements of known arsonists in real time on days of high fire danger,” Mr Baillieu said.

“The new monitoring system will also be available to courts when setting bail conditions, as part of tough reforms to Victoria’s bail system announced by the Coalition earlier this year.

“John Brumby should admit Labor has failed and adopt our policy to better protect Victorian families from dangerous criminals,” Mr Baillieu said.

Last Day in Paradise

GeoTagged, [N21.27397, E157.82390]

Aloha

Final day in Hawaii. Got up early and headed out for brekky in Waikiki before we set off on a road trip.

First stop was Haleiwa the capital of the north shore where we did some necessary souvenir shopping as one can never have enough souvenirs. I in a relationship first Jackie and I agreed upon and purchased a funky piece of art by this seasons ripcurl search artist Heather Brown. Jackie also brought a turtle and hopes it will clear customs.

After lunch we went for a swim at Waimea Bay where the kids had a ball being sucked in and out of the water over and over and over......

Took the scenic route home and saw some very spectacular coastline and mountains.

Bags are packed and we'll be home tomorrow night Ledger.

Pearl Harbor

GeoTagged, [N21.31193, E157.86221]

ALOHA!!

We tried to get the satnav to find Pearl Harbor this morning and the best it could do was Pearl Harbor Credit Union. So we headed west and found it anyway.

We decided to limit our experience to the world's last battleship - The USS Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Museum.

The Missouri is an impressive feat of engineering and, being the site of the truce signing that ended WWII, is a true historically significant ship. We were given a tour by a guide who could relate some personal experience which was kinda nice.
Next we went to the aviation museum which was a bit of a let down. I had to apologize to Jackie after we spent 30 minutes in a flight simulator that was more like a computer game.

This arvo we relaxed at the world famous Waikiki beach and then went for dinner in Chinatown. The boys tried everything and realized that they actually liked orange chicken and honey walnut shrimp.

On a side note, the ads for medicine on tv are funny. They start with 10 seconds of the drug's benefit and then finish with a 45 second disclaimer listing all the things that could go wrong and all the possible side effects.

Boat People

GeoTagged, [N33.93651, E118.40922]

"Somewhere, beyond the sea..."

Started the day with a submarine trip in the world's biggest passenger submarine. Diving down to 100 feet on a couple of artificial reefs, 2 planes and two ships, we gazed upon some fishies.

The highlights included Eagle Rays, Moor Fish and a real sea turtle. It did not talk nor did it high fin the sub.

We had our first dud meal of the holiday, lunch at Denny's. Should have gone there for breakfast like in the song.

Went shopping along the main road. Ezra bought a ukulele. I did not add to my hawaiian shirt collection. Jackie bought some cheap and nasty souvenirs from the cheap and nasty souvenir shop.

Dessert at the cheesecake factory. Those of you paying attention will remember we had lunch there in Orlando. Always finish what you start.

Went on a sunset dinner cruise on the world's largest Polynesian catamaran. Dinner was ok, the sunset nice but the real fun was the dancing afterwards.
We all got into it and the boys were dancing with a bunch of Japanese ladies and having their photos taken. Jackie showed that all those years hitting the dancefloor at Fames and her recent Zumba experience were not wasted as we did the 21st Century version of R&B square dancing.

I think Declan might be preparing for a Rugby League future. This morning at about 2 we were woken by a knocking on the hotel room door. It was Declan who had mistakenly left the room while looking for the bathroom.

Aloha!

Polynesian Cultural Centre

GeoTagged, [N21.27229, E157.82139]

We're back.

Spent a day traveling from Miami to Honolulu. This included a 90 minute delay on our LAX to Honolulu flight which came on top of a four hour layover in the world's most boring terminal.

Went for a walk around Waikiki which looks exactly like the movies. Had a big kahuna breakfast - eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns plus an additional plate of pancakes.

Drove around the island to the Polynesian Cultural Centre which is a place where you can get a taste of 6 Polynesian cultures: Hawaii, New Zealand Maori, Tahiti, Fiji and of course (Santo), Tonga.

Each culture has it's own village and one can see that although similar they are all considerably different. We got to make a fish out of coconut leaves, went to a luau, saw a canoe pageant and finished up with a spectacular live show, which involved fire twirling.

The place has been voted Hawaii's number 1 paid attraction. I'm guessing that the beach is the number 1 free attraction.

Today we're going on a submarine trip to the reef.

Orlando to Miami

GeoTagged, [N25.85476, E80.24409]

Transit Day.

Train due at 1pm. arrived at train station at 12. Advised train due at 3pm.

Took a cab to the Mall and had lunch at The Cheesecake Factory. We had sandwiches and pasta and were too full for cheesecake.

Walked through the Mall. Jackie bought clothes and I didn't by an iPhone case because the Apple Store didn't have any.

The train was very comfortable and quite cheap. Dinner was dodgy microwave fare. Hot on the outside, room temperature in the middle.

Can't tell you anything about Miami. We're at the hotel and have to be at the airport at 7 in the morning for the flight to Hawaii via LAX. Just realized theres a 4 hour layover at LA so they'd better have some entertainment!

Night all.

Go Saints!

Universal Orlando - where is everyone?

GeoTagged, [N28.35460, E81.51367]

It's quiet.

Too quiet.

We think yesterday's storm may have scared a few people off. In order to guarantee there would be no rain today we packed raincoats.

No rain today.

Highlights:
The Simpsons Ride is sensational. Very funny and very Simpsons, including the line "foolish humans, you know all rides must exit through the gift shop".
The Mummy was good also.
We noticed today that we had VIP Express tickets which are queue jumper tickets. This was a surprise as we didn't pay for them. On a busy day they would have been a godsend but today they were just cool.
We had to go back to Hogsmeade because one can never have too many souvenirs.
We decided that we were too dry so we finished off with the three "you may get soaked" rides.
First was Jurassic Park. Good ride, a little splash. Next was RipSaw Falls with Dudley DoRight. We were pretty excited about this one but it was postponed due to technical difficulties which later proved to be a large gentleman wedged too tightly into his log!
Popeye and Bluto treated us to an absolute soaking on the best raft ride we've been on.
We were now saturated which can only mean one thing: time for more shopping. Ezra found a cool hat. Jackie bought a pair of pants coz denim does not dry.
Dinner at the biggest Hard Rock Cafe in the world.
Tomorrow is a train trip from Orlando to Miami which will either be dreadfully boring and painful or fun and enlightening.

We'll see...

Wizarding World of Harry Potter

GeoTagged, [N28.35782, E81.49767]

This was a good day.
We arrived at Universal Studios at around 9am and due to Jackie's extraordinary planning skills we grabbed our etickets and beat the queues.
Like most of the other folks we made a beeline for Harry Potter.
We walked through Dr Seuss World and some other vanilla stuff and then suddenly could see Hogsmeade with Hogwarts in the distance.
The photos won't do the theme park justice. it's like walking into a real town. there are shops (Honeydukes, etc), The Three Broomsticks restaurant, Ollivandars. It's the books and movies brought to life.
We went straight to Hogwarts for THE BEST RIDE EVER - Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey. It is awesome. One second you're walking through Hogwarts and the next you're flying in a Quidditch match. And I mean IN!
Next for a wand. We grabbed some butterbeer and queued for half an hour to choose a wand (or did the wand choose us).
Jumped on the Dragon Challenge Rollercoaster ( Ezra and Kobe twice). Declan was about an inch short of the height requirement but took it pretty well after I promised him another go on the Harry Potter ride.
Lunch at the Three Broomsticks and then shopping. Be warned: The every flavour beans might include vomit!
The plan was then to do the Hogwarts ride again and then check out Jurassic Park but while we were in Hogwarts the heavens opened for a serious downpour.
We ran through Hogsmeade and took shelter in The Owlery with our 6 bags of souvenirs.
The rain didn't let up so we bought some sexy ponchos and headed out to see if any rides hadn't been closed by the lightning.
Fortunately a couple of rides were open including The Amazing Spiderman (awesome) and The Cat in The Hat (nice).
Dinner at Bubba Gump & Co Shrimp and back to the room.

The rain has stopped and we're hoping it will stay clear tomorrow for another visit to Universal. We really want to get on the Incredible Hulk Rollercoaster which looks terrifying.

Disneyworld - Hollywood Studios

GeoTagged, [N28.38315, E81.52522]

Last Day of Disney!

Highlights of today included:
The Rock n Roller coaster - extremely fast ride in the dark, 3 loops and a blasting Aerosmith soundtrack.
The tower of Terror which is a random 13 storey drop while strapped into a dark elevator.

The boys were very impressed when Jackie dragged them to The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast shows.

We also saw 2 stunt shows and a great 3D Muppet Movie with the Swedish Chef controlling the projector.
It was hot today and humid. 630pm brought a brief thunderstorm but it hasn't cooled down any.
A couple more souvenirs and tonight we sacrificed my suitcase. I didn't really need any clothes anyway...

Dinner at The House of Blues where we were greeted with the sensational news that Sir James Hird has been appointed coach of Essendon! woohoo!

Harry Potter tomorrow.

Epcot

GeoTagged, [N28.37057, E81.55193]

Hot today. 32. Hot and humid. Even the insects can't be bothered flying. Half of them just latch on to a buddy and tag along.

Visited Epcot at Disneyworld. There are two parts: Future World and World Showcase.

Future World starts with a quite impressive ride inside the famous Epcot ball. The kids loved it as they got to choose their own future. Declan wants to live in a recycled treehouse in the country.

There were less rides at Epcot and the standout was Soarin' which is a simulated hang-gliding ride over California that was totally immersive and totally sweet dude.

Also totally sweet was the interactive meet and greet with Crush the Turtle from Finding Nemo. Crush was computer generated but acted, reacted and conversed in real time. Hi-tech and pretty funny.

Our day culminated in a special viewing of the spectacular Michael Jackson short film from 1986 Captain Eo. Produced by George Lucas, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and shot in 3D it was a vivid reminder of how special MJ was and I'm not normally a big fan.

We ate dinner in morocco but the highlight of our brief visit to World Showcase was a photo opportunity with the hottest Disney character of all time - Mary Poppins. Yes. Jackie took a pic of just me and Mary and then we had a family photo of me, Mrs Hughes, the boys and the nanny.

Either Harry Potter or Universal Studios tomorrow, depending on what time we wake up.

Shopping, Typhoon Lagoon and Zombies

This evening we sacrificed Ezra's suitcase to souvenirs. We've also bought a new bag which we'll use for clothes on the way home. I mean to put clothes in, not that we're going to wear a bag.

I blame it on Downtown Disney. It's ace. The only thing holding us back is that Harry Potter is on Monday and we all want wands.

After shopping we went to one of the Disney water parks : Typhoon Lagoon. it's the 1st water park I've been to so there's nothing to compare it with but we all had a good time and didn't get bored in 5 hours there.

Of course we took to premium cabana option so we had shelter from the sun, plenty of water, comfy chairs and catering.

Respect to Declan today who snorkled for the 1st time and struggled a little with the mask and the snorkel. His response was to go again straight away. No Fear!

Talking about no fear, Ezra is becoming an adrenalin junky. All the rides, all the watersides and then straight out into the 6' wave pool sending down 6' waves. No Fear.

Dinner was at T Rex which is a themed restaurant that is full of animatronic dinosaurs, fire, waterfalls and a meteor shower every 20 minutes.

I've caught up with the footy news. Is Mick Malthouse still saying that kicking for goal is not a problem? We'll be in Hawaii for the replay so should be able to watch it live.

An early night tonight. Kids are already asleep / unconscious. All this holidaying is exhausting.

Still can't comment on my blog

Hey everyone.

Going to Harry Potter on Monday (Tuesday your time) an the boys are having an awesome time!

Kennedy Space Center

GeoTagged, [N28.37249, E81.51563]

Kennedy Space Center is one of the awesomest places on Earth.
After a short cab mix up we caught a tour bus out to Cape Canaveral. We checked out the astronaut hall of fame and then drove to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Center.

The first thing we did was the Space Shuttle Launch Experience. You sit down and buckle up inside a shuttle payload bay simulation, get tilted 90 degrees so you're on your back and then experience something like a shuttle launch. Apparently its a good approximation but without the Gs. Good fun.
Then we checked out a retired shuttle and some other ace stuff.

Lunch was with an astronaut. Essentially a good feed with a guy who, before going up on 3 shuttle missions was a Vietnam war fighter ace and the navy's chief test pilot. He described himself as lucky. Very modest but fascinating to listen to.
On the bus for a tour which took in a stack of interesting sites including the Vehicle Assembly Building where they attach the shuttle to the boosters and fuel tank. We were also lucky that there is a shuttle on the launch pad in preparation for a November 1 launch. We got as close as allowed. Picture above.
The tour became totally more awesomer when we were dropped off at the Saturn V exhibit.
The Saturn V rocket is in a really long building. First you see a movie, then a view of the original Apollo launch control room complete with lights and audio in time with a launching rocket movie.
Nothing can prepare you for waking through the next door to stand underneath the Saturn V engines. They are huge!
The Saturn V is on it's side and sitting in a cradle. It has been disassembled into the 3 stages plus the command/service module and the lander.
The thing is 363 feet long and must stand as one of the greatest feats of human engineering achievement.
We were unfortunately a bit short of time so I couldn't stand with my mouth open all day. We watched the movie of the landing (I won't spoil the surprises) and then caught a bus back to KSC, grabbed some souvenirs and then headed back to Orlando.
Because 13 hours wasn't enough of a day we grabbed some dinner at the Rainforest Cafe and then hit the shops of Downtown Disney for some serious credit card damage.
There is one Disney shop which has 12 different stores inside - but no bookmarks. Jackie and I resisted the $37000 crystal castle. (no misprint).
The weather today was a little cooler and tomorrow should be more of the same - about 32c. Perfect for Typhoon Lagoon.

And maybe some more shopping...

Animal Kingdom

A great day today.

Animal Kingdom is like a zoo but interesting and fun. Learning from yesterday that the longest queues are for character photos we got in early for pics with Lilo & Stitch, Mickey (got a hug), Minnie, Goofy & Donald.

Then saw the Lion King which was spectacular and almost worth entry on its own. We also saw Nemo the Musical in the arvo.

The rides were fun including Kali River Rapids where Declan got a good lesson in karma after calling out "I didn't get wet!" And yes, Liza, Expedition Everest was a sensational ride. Especially the going backwards in the dark bit.

Today Jackie added a baby gorilla to her list of animals she wants at home ( so far a panda, baby elephant and killer whale).

This park shut at 5 which meant we were a bit rushed but I feel we saw enough. Dinner was at Planet Hollywood which was a hoot except Jackie wouldn't sing along to "livin on a prayer" and "don't stop believing".

Quick bit of shopping and now to bed.

We have a 6am start to catch the all day tour to Kennedy Space Center.
I'm wearing my Star Wars Lego t-shirt because that's how I roll.

Magic Kingdom was AWESOME!

Well today we went to Disneyworld and our first day was The Magic Kingdom. It is a truly magical place and if you don't have a smile on your face the entire time then, well...

Let me here you say a big "thankya" for fastpass. Say no to 40 minute queues. Grab a fastpass and come back an hour later and jump the queue. and it's free.

so the only big queues were for photos with Daisy Duck and Woody & Jessie. The woody and Jessie queue was a little trying in the 33 degree brilliant warm lovely sunshine. but it beats rain I guess.

Space Mountain, Peter Pan, Big Splash. We pretty much knocked everything over today. plus we saw a parade and possibly the best fireworks show I've ever seen.

The kids are wasted and my feet are sore. Also the bus to go back to the resort is late but this was a great day that I'll never forget and hopefully the boys will remember. 12 hours at one themepark is a big day.

Jackie has started collecting Mickey and Minnie dolls. it's all good.

good night!

In transit

Today was pretty boring and hardly worth blogging. We flew from Phoenix to Orlando via Dallas. Had Maccas for lunch and are now at World Quest Orlando.

This condo is bigger than our house and has 3 bathrooms. We're about 3 minutes from Disneyworld.

Some general observations about the holiday so far:

- Americans are mostly very nice and polite
- Americans are mostly better at general conversation than Australians.
- Service is quite good, even at Maccas
- Milkshakes here are awesome
- Things are almost the same, but different enough to think I'm in a parallel universe
- Americans are not shy about showing those who serve in the Armed Forces a tremendous amount of respect. At the Shamu show in Seaworld the host invited all current and past members of the services to stand, thanked them and then they received a generous round of applause. Quite moving.

Magic Kingdom at Disneyworld tomorrow!

The Grand Canyon

We're very excited about the arrival of Alice Parker. Congrats to Emily and Ryan.

Now, I believe Americans have a propensity to over exaggerate. "The World Series, the biggest, the best, etc" but when they tell me that The Grand Canyon is the widest, longest, deepest and most spectacular natural feature in the world they are not exaggerating.

We flew to the Grand Canyon from Phoenix in a 10 seater cesna. The last half hour was a scenic view of the canyon. It is massive. It is spectacular. Everywhere we looked we saw soaring rock formations and plunging ravines and side canyons with colours from reds to greens yellows to whites and browns.
Meandering through the bottom of the canyon is the Colorado River which has created this scene over millions of years.

We landed at Grand Canyon village and checked out some great views along the south rim. Jackie took a lot of photos of squirrels, chipmunks or gophers. We're not sure which.

After a quick lunch was more sightseeing and more spectacular views. I envy those who have had the chance to hike along the bottom or raft in the river. Flying over was great, viewing from the rim was excellent but now I want more!

Next time...

Driving from San Diego to Phoenix

GeoTagged, [N33.47643, E112.03784]

Hey everyone.

Hit the road at 8 this morning in Escondido California and am now lounging in a hotel in Phoenix Arizona.

Drove through some of the more remarkable countryside I've seen. Sweeping mountain ranges and sprawling valleys.

We took a few photos but not with the phone so you'll have to wait until we get home.

We stopped at Palm Desert for morning tea. Palm Desert is some sort of newly built luxury town in the desert. It has lush and green vegetation and cool maxxed aircon inside the buildings. Outside temperatures reached 109f or 42c. The good old Chevy didn't mind a bit and we ignored the sign advising us to avoid overheating by switching off the air-conditioning .

One sign we didn't ignore was the sign that read:

State prison ahead.
DO NOT PICK UP HITCHHIKERS!

We spotted gophers, prairie dogs and cacti.

Dinner soon and then a 7am pickup for our day trip to The Grand Canyon. I promise a photo or two.

Can't comment on my blog

Ok it appears I can't comment on my blog because the verification tool doesn't work on the iPhone.

I'll answer some questions tonight.

In the meantime, mum, I was disappointed for me, not for the boys!

Trolley tour & football

GeoTagged, [N32.77180, E117.19042]

Having knocked off the theme parks around San Diego we decided to see some of the city. We boarded a trolley bus in the old town and spent the day hoping on and off.

Highlights included the bar from Top Gun where Goose sang "Great Balls of Fire" and the hill Charlie chased Maverick down.

Oh the other stuff. San Diego is a great city with a rich and terrific history. I really can recommend it to anyone. There is a city park, Balboa, which contains the zoo and about 20 museums plus theatres, art galleries and cafes. The US pacific fleet is based here and we saw 3 Nimitz class carriers which are each about 300 meters long. We went to little Italy and could only find one place with gelati.

Night time saw us attending an American College football game. I was most disappointed the boys didn't want their photo taken with the cheerleaders...
The game was impressive but San Diego had their clocks cleaned by the Aggies.

Tomorrow is the 6 hour drive to Phoenix. Hopefully I can convince Jackie to share the driving or I'm going to be forced to drink some more of that god awful concoction the Americans call coffee.

Happy birthday to Nanna Judy! We tried to call but you must have been at lunch or out at the cinemas watching a movie.

Seaworld San Diego

GeoTagged, [N33.23675, E117.14380]

Imagine someone built an aquarium, threw in some rides and then charged $100 (+ CA tax) and called it Seaworld San Diego.
Then imagine it was awesome!
We rocked up at opening time to find 100 cars already in the queues. Forget about public transport, this is Southern California.
Once quickly inside thanks to Jackie's Internet tickets, we wandered aimlessly until we found a queue of about 10 people with a sign "dolphin feeding $6". One doesn't expect much for $6 unless it's a kids meal but we got to pat and feed a dolphin at the side of the pool.
We thought that was pretty cool. And later fed some bat rays and sea lions.

We saw both major shows - the killer whale show "believe" which makes one cry clap and cheer at the same time and the cirque de sole like dolphin show in which a pod of dolphins, 2 pilot whales and a few birds show off while some gymnasts gyrate and some divers - you know, jump into the water.
Did the rides. One was a fair dinkum adult one which included a 60 foot drop into water. All the kids went on and then Declan and Kobe wanted to go again. Declan wanted to be in front.
I saw a CHiPs patrolman pull someone over on the freeway this morning. I can only imagine it was for NOT traveling 10 MPH over the speed limit.
Drove past Miramar and saw a jet land but Jackie won't let me go visit. She doesn't believe I'm in the top 1% of naval aviators...
Ate dinner in a restaurant that advertised wood fired pizza but only had 3 types on the menu...
Still haven't met anyone rude. Is it just SoCal?
Loving the holiday, loving the weather - 26c everyday. Tomorrow is our last day here though before we drive to Phoenix on Sunday.

Night all

Marshall and Jackie, Ezra, Kobe, Declan and Shamu the Killer Whale.

Legoland

Today we had the pleasure of experiencing Legoland California in the middle of the week out of season. Longest wait for a ride was 10 minutes. No queues anywhere and I can only imagine what people must think when they are standing in line beside a sign that reads "the approximate wait time from here is 45 minutes".

We tried all the rides and poor Ezra and Kobe were on one when it malfunctioned and all the cars crawled around. It wasn't their fault but it seemed to everyone that they weren't pedaling hard enough. They cracked it with Declan who thought it was pretty funny.

Ezra went on all the rides and as the photo shows really enjoyed it. Proud of them all today.

We didn't spend thousands of dollars at the Legoland shop where I'm pretty sure they stock all the lego. I still feel like a nufty with the money. I'm collecting shrapnel and am up to about $1.

We had apple fries today. These are thin slices of granny smiths deep fried and served with vanilla whipped cream. The boys' lunch came with a collector cup, raisins and potato chips - again.

Off to Seaworld tomorrow and the resort concierge is trying to find a baseball or football game for Saturday. Probably a college game as The Padres are at St Louis this weekend.

Noticed today that the Suburban runs on E85 so I've been pouring sugar sachets into the tank. Runs like a dream. Could get used to a car that seats 8 and has enough room in the boot for 5 suitcases with space to spare.

San Diego Zoo

Today's lessons:
Lions spray up to 10 feet so stand back
Pink flamingos get their colour from shrimp
If I give the kids the video camera to share for the day they will fight and complain for the whole day

Meanwhile Jackie has decided to adopt a panda instead of having children of her own.

Still haven't run into anything. Jackie has a fear of parked cars and I've forgotten about the rear view mirror.

Drove into downtown San Diego tonight for dinner and had pasta. we started with a dressing entree with some lettuce leaves thrown in. the kids finished with an Oreo Shake FTW.

Arrival

GeoTagged, [N33.23342, E117.14386]

We're finally here in sunny Escondido. Formerly the avocado capital of America, now a picturesque tourist destination in the San Diego hinterland.

So far we have learned that the Airbus A380 is big. very big. unfortunately it is still impossible to sleep in cattle class. The steerage service on Qantas was first rate and the plane is quiet. If only the other passengers would shut up. Lights out means go to sleep people!
I have learned to drive on the right hand side of the road and am doing so in a Chevy Suburban (tick rental box "biggest possible passenger vehicle"). With the brilliant co driving effort from Jackie we havent crashed yet.

Have sampled some local cuisine: Carl's Jr Burgers and some truly awesome milkshakes from Ruby's Diner on the Pacific Highway at Laguna.

Ezra is still enjoying the 30something hours of birthday celebration. The 14th of September is proving to be a very long day! He was a little concerned when we switched over to California time mid-flight and I asked for the presents back as it was the 13th again.

We're a little sleep deprived but have had a dip and a waterslide and will head out to dinner as soon as Declan stops mucking around and gets dressed.

I have just realized I am in the same time zone as William Shatner. Good times.

The to-do's are to done!

Hit the office at 7am needing to knock off 13 issues and aiming for a noon getaway. noon came and went and whilst physically in the office all arvo I was hidden away furiously trying to send 113 emails. Hopefully no one prints them...
Wishing the team at Poste-Haste all the best I have left for a month. The folks powering the office are a highly skilled dedicated bunch so our customers are in safe hands.
Meanwhile the packing is done. Ledger the cat knows something is going on but considering who's looking after the place while we're gone I don't think he'll miss us. Jackie's cooking dinner and we are out of here.

Packed and ready to rock

Well it's the calm before the storm. Everything seems ready. Bags done. Passports. Itinerary. Just need to sneak through one day at work and knock off the 13 items on my to do list. Nothing could possibly go wrong now...

Just in case you're interested!

I also promise to try and make it interesting...
